My Story

If you're into soul warming indie pop music, to help you ponder the universe, or to sing-a-long in the car, then I'm your girl.

I consider myself a songwriter, before a singer or guitarist. I didn't have an amazing voice as a child. In fact, family members would jokingly tell me to shut up, when I would sing in the shower, because I would be flat and out of tune. But, I loved it anyway.

When I was 10, I had just moved back to Australia, from the United States, and I asked my parents if I could start guitar lessons. I did, and loved it. The first song I learnt was “Knockin' On Heavens Door” by Bob Dylan. At 13, I asked if I could start singing lessons, and like a fine wine, my vocal skills got better every year. I started writing short poems on the bus rides to and from school, then taught myself how to apply melodies and guitar chords to them.

I wrote a number of unreleased songs as a teenager, such as “17 Again" , “Adult Years”, “Lovestruck”, “Memories” and “Shockwaves”. I sang ‘Adult Years’ for my Valedictory, when I graduated. I also wrote unreleased songs for my grandparents, for their birthdays, such as “Legend”. Nowadays, songs come to me when I'm driving, or having a shower, or in the middle of the night. Since becoming a mother, I often get song ideas whilst feeding, or cradling my daughter to sleep.

My debut single came out in 2016, ‘Love Like That’, which got to the top 10 on the iTunes country charts. I wrote and recorded the song with Steve Deal, who was in Sydney, Australia, at the time. I then worked with Simeon Shinkfield on my single, ‘Soda Pop’ which got into the top 40 on iTunes, and went on to also do a self-titled EP in 2019.

In 2019, I released “Think Again Boy” which was written and recorded in Nashville, Tennessee, with John Capek. I did two trips to Nashville to explore music there, and wrote some other songs whilst I was there, which I have not released to date. I met John Capek on the second trip there. I went to almost every record label in Nashville, to drop off my EPK to them, in the hope that one of them would take notice of my music.

In 2018, I met Rob Amoruso, initially as good family friends, but then began working together in 2020. We have worked on numerous songs together, including “Thinkin' Bout You”, "23" (both songs also written with Elizabeth Webber) and “Two Hearts”. It was during this season that my music organically developed, and pivoted into more indie-pop, moving away from my music being stylistically country.

In 2023, I wanted to put a timestamp on a special time in my life, being pregnant with my first child. Rob and I collaborated on three acoustic songs, as part of an EP called “The Pregnancy Sessions”, which was released not long after I gave birth. The three songs, “A Flower With Thorns”, “Come Little One (Mum Song)” and “Jack Is Calling Your Name”, are completely acoustic, consisting of just vocals and guitar. “Come Little One” has been a favourite to perform live.

I use music as one form of therapy, and a way to process my emotions. There are times when I write lyrics, and then months or years later, I look back on them, and I gain this new insight into who I am as a person, and where I was at, at the time of writing those lyrics. It's also a way that I mark key moments in my life, hoping to share those stories behind the songs, with my children one day.

Rob and I worked on a project back in 2022, written about my husband's journey through multiple myeloma, and what that was like from my perspective. I finally got to release these songs in 2024. The first song from the project debuted, called ‘Winter Coat’. Later the same year, ‘Green Eyes’ and ‘The Day Sadness Came to Town’ were released. The Day Sadness Came to Town is my most successful song of my career so far, and has seen my fan base, and music engagement grow, since its release.

In 2025, the fourth song on the project came out, called ‘Paris’, with one more song still to be released, called ‘Blue Fire’.

Yours Truly, DS xx
